Sep 27, 2013

Dirceu Viana Júnior revealed his 50 Great Portuguese Wines for Brasil at São Paulo on Wednesday, September 25th, after tasting about 460 Portuguese wines. A selection was made combining quality and good-value wines and bearing in mind the Brazilian consumers, who Dirceu Viana Júnior plans to guide and educate.

The nine wine regions are represented on the list, which showcases Portugal’s potential as a wine country. Most of wines are from Douro, Vinho Verde, Alentejo and Dão regions.
The only South American and Portuguese speaking Master of Wine reveals that “it was clear, during my selection process that quality of Portuguese wines has never been as high as nowadays. We are in the right moment.” He adds, “I am confident that I did a great selection. I hope it serves as a catalyst for consumers, importers and distributors explore the richness and diversity that Portuguese wines have to offer”.

The selection “includes inexpensive good wines, perfect for every day from the main Portuguese wine regions. We have modern, traditional and distinct wines with strong personality. Some of the well-known Portuguese winemakers are part of the list. I hope everyone can find many familiar names on this list, but also expect that many of them will be a revelation”.

Portugal is one of the many wine-production countries that exports to Brazil and Jorge Monteiro, Viniportugal CEO, says that “to strengthen the market position in Brazil it’s the Viniportugal’s main purpose and increase 25% the sales in three years. Although Brazilian consumers usually choose South American wines, they normally are curious about Portuguese wines. We believe there's a lot of work to be done promoting Portuguese wines next to consumers and trade”.

Jorge Monteiro adds “Selecting a Brazilian wine expert to guie Brazilian consumers is one of the Viniportugal’s goals. We know that a Brazilian wine expert has a great influence and his opinion lends credibility to Portuguese wines image in Brazil”.
