Guild of Sommeliers Seminar Series Connects Sommeliers with Portuguese Wines

Sep 12, 2019

American sommeliers are clamoring to know more about Portuguese wines, as evidenced by the attendance and enthusiasm at a series of seminars co-hosted by Wines of Portugal and the Guild of Sommeliers this summer. From July 9 to August 26, Portuguese wines traveled to top sommeliers in Austin, TX; Boulder, CO; Los Angeles, CA and San Francisco, CA through a series of intricate and educational seminars hosted by the Guild of Sommeliers.

Around 30 trade professionals attended each seminar, reaching a total of 113 of the country’s most knowledgeable and energized sommeliers. Christopher Tanghe, MS, the chief instructor of the Guild of Sommeliers, led an informative and engaging overview of the wines and culture of Portugal. Though there was plenty of information to cover in this diverse and dynamic country, Tanghe discussed Portugal’s history, climate, geology, regions, grapes, styles, producers, and more in remarkable depth. Attendees posed questions and sparked conversation about Portugal and its range of wines, keeping the atmosphere in each seminar educational yet convivial.

To supplement the discussion, Wines of Portugal provided 12-16 wines for each seminar, covering styles, grapes, and regions from across the country. Of the wines, there were quite a few standouts, from Port wines to Bairrada, covering Douro to Vinho Verde to the Setubal Peninsula. But every wine surprised and delighted the sommelier attendees of these courses, many of whom have never had the opportunity to taste such a comprehensive range of Portuguese wines. Each left the seminar series energized, educated, and ready to spread the word about Portuguese wine to their guests.
