João Portugal Ramos

Alentejo wine history might not be what it is today if it wasn’t forJoão Portugal Ramos. When João Portugal Ramos began his career as a winemaker, the Alentejo region was still widely unknown and very much a new region that was beginning to take its first steps into the wine industry. Nobody did as much for the region’s promotion and reputation within the industry as João Portugal Ramos.

Many cooperatives in the region benefited from his talented work which led to local wineries growing.  In an eclectic way, his influence also extended to Setúbal, Algarve, Lisbon, Beiras, Dão and Tejo, where he later ended up creating Falua wines. He was also influential in the Douro, where he created Duorum wines in partnership with another great Portuguese winemaker, José MariaSoares Franco.

João Portugal Ramos founded his company as an autonomous producer over a decade and a half ago and today he is one of the largest national producers.
