Wines of Portugal Grand Tasting in San Francisco Sparks Curiosity

May 10, 2019

California’s Bay Area got a bit of Portuguese flair when Wines of Portugal headed to San Francisco for their grand tasting on April 2, 2019. Held from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, the grand tasting attracted top members of the Bay Area wine media and trade, from retailers and sommeliers to importers and journalists.

The afternoon event welcomed 33 Portuguese producers representing regions across Portugal, from Vinho Verde to Algarve. A whopping 236 media and trade attendees filled the high-ceilinged ballroom during the walk-around tasting, journeying from table to table to taste over 260 white, rosé, red, sparkling, and sweet wines. Intriguing and enthusiastic conversations with Portuguese wine producers could be heard throughout the space, as attendees had the opportunity to learn about these wines directly from the winery principals. As wine professionals mingled to discuss the array of Portuguese wines, they also sampled light bites inspired by the country’s cuisine, from salt cod cakes to Portuguese cured ham.

Just outside of the ballroom, attendees lined up outside the hotel’s Windsor Room to clamor for a coveted seat in one of the grand tasting’s three educational seminars. Led by Master Sommelier Gillian Ballance and Wines of Portugal U.S. Ambassador Eugénio Jardim, each seminar had a different focus, including Regional White Blends, Regional Red Blends, and Portuguese Sweet Decadence. Together, the seminars guided 80 attendees through a range of wines from across Portugal, highlighting regional and stylistic diversity.

Their curiosity sparked, San Francisco’s wine media and trade members left the tasting with a desire to discover even more of what Portugal has to offer.
