WINES OF PORTUGAL CHALLENGE CEREMONY AWARDS 258 OF THE 1,007 WINES IN COMPETITION

The Wines of Portugal Challenge showed more than a thousand wines to international wine critics and was a good initiative at the right time – that is the conclusion of ViniPortugal, the event organizer. The winners were announced on June 7th at the Pátio da Galé in Lisbon.

919 table wines and 88 fortified wines competed for medals. The 258 medals - 125 Bronze, 81 Silver, 36 Gold and 16 Great Gold - awarded several wines, many of which were from Alentejo, Douro, Lisboa and Dão. There were also medals given for the 2013 Best Fortified Wine and 2013 Best Wine.

The best wine of 2013 was Vale das Areias Syrah 2010 from wine producer “Sociedade Agrícola da Labrugeira” and the best fortified wine was Duorum Vintage 2011.

“It was an exciting challenge that involved ViniPortugal efforts and allowed us to evaluate what will still need to be done in next year’s competition, which will take place between May 12th and 16th, 2014 at CNEMA in Santarém. The award ceremony will be held on June 6th, in a location that will be announced at a later date,” affirms Jorge Monteiro, ViniPortugal CEO.

“The competition demonstrated the strong quality and consistency of Portuguese wine, which was undoubtedly one of its objectives. The Challenge also involved a record number of Portuguese wines in any one competition and the positive involvement of several international experts,” adds the ViniPortugal CEO.
