Portuguese Wines Win Over TexSom International Wine Awards Participants

Mar 04, 2020

The TexSom International Wine Awards is one of the United States’ most prestigious wine competitions, with over 2,800 wines submitted for judging by the world’s most prominent wine experts. But in the middle of the awards, on Monday, February 17, the 216 participants took a welcome break from the judging process to taste an array of wines from across Portugal over lunch.

Alongside a traditional wine judging process, the TexSom International Wine Awards offers learning opportunities throughout the competition, not only for the 61 judges and 86 volunteers, but also for 45 sommeliers and 24 mentors participating in the annual Sommelier Retreat. While the judges and volunteers facilitated the expansive judging process, the sommeliers—from 16 states and 2 countries—and mentors—a mix of Master Sommeliers, Masters of Wine, and top wine editors—participated in education seminars, tasted medal-winning wines, and practiced both writing, sommelier service, and blind tasting techniques.

At the Wines of Portugal luncheon, participants had the opportunity to taste 10 red and white wines from Vinho Verde to Bairrada to Alentejo, and from Douro to Dão. Eugenio Jardim, the U.S. ambassador for Wines of Portugal, was present as a judge at the TexSom International Wine Awards and guided the participants through the wines on their tables.

Of course, Portuguese wines also made a showing in the judging of the TexSom International Wine Awards: from Portugal, there were 17 entrants and 58 entries in the competition. The results of the judging have not yet been revealed, but they will be posted on the TexSom website soon.
