Quinta das Bágeiras

By Rui Falcão*

Quinta das Bágeiras, a small boutique Bgeiras.jpegproducer from Bairrada, is today one of the few wineries who is still in keeping with the region's traditions.  Using only local grape varieties, Quinta das Bágeiras is keen to carry on maintaining the timeless practices of Bairrada.

The red wines that are produced are made almost exclusively with the Baga grape variety and continue to be produced in open fermentation tanks (lagares) and aged in wooden barrels steeped in wine, rather than the more modern styles of using stainless steel. Even the white wines are made in a rare and mysterious way compared to contemporary practices as they are decanted into a series of small open fermentation tanks.

Wines from Quinta das Bágeiras are known to be amongst the best in Bairrada and Portugal - terroir wines that are full of character with a unique identity and great aging potential.
