Despite being deeply connected to the Alentejo, in the south of Portugal, Luis Duarte is actually from the Douro. His career has been marked by his pioneering spirit, the ability to be one step ahead the game and to take chances, as well as his practicality with which he has taken on the challenges that he has been faced with.

He was one of the first students to have been awarded the degree of Oenology from UTAD – the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro. He was part of the team that started the Esporão project and has also designed the ambitious Herdade dos Grous project which he is the general manager of, overseeing all aspects of the business, from wine tourism to agriculture.

Duarte has established himself as one of the most respected Alentejo wine consultants, assisting in successful business and winemaking projects.  These projects include Quinta da Malhadinha and Quinta do Mouro, as well as Alentejo ex-libris wines called "Marias Malhadinha" and "Quinta do Mouro Gold label ".  He also used his renowned pragmatic and passionate style to start producing his own wines.  His wines are designed to meet exactly what the markets want at the moment, resulting in his wines being the third most popular Alentejo wine sold in Brazil.
