Winners of Wines of Portugal Wine Quest Unveiled

Jun 30, 2014

Wines of Portugal are delighted to announce the winners of the inaugural Wines of Portugal Wine Quest 2014.

The initiative – which aims to build strong and productive relationships with the industry’s up-and-coming sommeliers – saw 15 participants take on three challenging modules within the overall Wines of Portugal Wine Quest programme.

All sommeliers attended a Wines of Portugal Wine Academy educational session taking an in-depth look at Portuguese wines, with a subsequent examination; followed by a trip to Portugal (covering the North, South and Central regions) led by Wines of Portugal Wine Quest Ambassadors, Charles Metcalfe, Sarah Ahmed and João Pires MS – during which each attendee had to select two Portuguese wines to champion.

The initiative concluded with a presentation day at The Westbury Hotel, where each sommelier was judged on their skills and knowledge across a number of categories, including presentation, blind tasting and food and wine matching capabilities.

Dorian Guillon, assistant Head Sommelier at Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester, scooped the top spot as winner of the Wines of Portugal Wine Quest 2014, followed by runners up, Piotr Pietras, from Maze by Gordon Ramsay and Orsi Szentkiralyi, former sommelier, now tasting manager at Wotwine.

As Wines of Portugal Wine Quest winner, Dorian will receive £3,000 – with each runner up awarded £1,000 each.

Senior Brand, Communication and Area Manager for Wines of Portugal, Tânia Branco Oliveira, says: “It's been fantastic to work with such an enthusiastic and knowledgeable group of sommeliers. Together, they have explored, enjoyed and discovered Portugal and its wines and will no doubt now go out and spread the word. Congratulations to all of them, and of course particularly Dorian, Orsi and Piotr for rising to the challenge!"
