Wines of Portugal Wine Quest Winners Announced

Aug 03, 2015

The Wines of Portugal Wine Quest winners were announced last week in London, with sommeliers Christophe Richelet of Taberna do Mercado and Maggie Mak of Maze by Gordon Ramsay named winner and runner up respectively.

Wine Quest is an initiative run by Wines of Portugal, which aims to build strong relationships with sommeliers and promote the diversity and versatility of Portuguese wines to the on-trade.

Seven sommeliers attended Wines of Portugal Wine Quest, each having completed the Wine Academy day and a trip to North or South Portugal alongside the competitions’ ambassadors Ronan Sayburn MS, Sarah Ahmed and Charles Metcalfe.

Each of the seven sommeliers selected two wines from their trip to Portugal, one red and one white, to present to the ambassadors following a morning of challenges. These included a multiple choice exam testing their knowledge of Portugal and Portuguese wine, a blind tasting exam with 6 Portuguese wines, a food matching assessment and a surprise decanting test with a total of 100 points available across all the challenges.

Richelet won the challenge with 72.5 points out of 100 and was awarded a £2,000 prize, while Mak achieved 72 points and was awarded with a £500 prize.

Sonia Vieira from Wines of Portugal commented ‘We were very impressed by the presentations and selection of wines by all the entrants, congratulations to the winning sommeliers who truly demonstrated the quality and variety of Portuguese wines. We’re delighted by the sommeliers’ enthusiasm about Portuguese wines, and their newfound knowledge of what Portugal has to offer.’
