Sommelier Wine Awards 2014: The Results

May 29, 2014

2014 was a great year for Portugal at the Sommelier Wine Awards with the country moving from 9th to 8th place in the medal league table, overtaking Argentina.

Portugal won a total of 70 medals including 9 Gold, 28 Silver, 16 Bronze and 17 Commended.

Portugal has been making steady progress in the Sommelier Wine Awards over the last five years, and in 2014 the country finally arrived, with an impressive showing across the category. The renaissance of Portuguese whites, spearheaded by Vinho Verde and its reasonably priced and restaurant-friendly wines, translated into an incredible 16 medals for Portugal’s white offerings.

A spokesperson for the Sommelier Wine Awards said: "There’s been a growing feeling among sommeliers over the past couple of years of the Sommelier Wine Awards that Portugal is increasingly becoming one of the countries to watch. And what initially began as very much a red revolution seems to have spilled over into the whites as well. Sixteen medals was a terrific performance."

We also extend our congratulations to D&F Portuguese Wines who were awarded Portuguese Merchant of the Year with 3 Gold medals, 7 Silver, 5 Bronze and 6 Commended: “D&F was comfortably the dominant force in this section of the competition, with high-scoring medals from all over the country, and at all price points, from just above House Wine level to wedding anniversary celebration. The Madeiras, too, were among the best fortified wines of the competition.”
